The Irvings: Shaking the family tree

Jim Irving is a hulking, forceful presence in his 50s, who towers over an empire of trees, mills and trucks. His cousin Kenneth, a few years younger, is an athletic-looking executive who manages an energy colossus along the Bay of Fundy. These two men are virtually unknown outside their home province of New Brunswick. But they are future multibillionaires, as the leaders of the next generation of the mighty Irving family and its 125-year-old business dynasty. .

Injured Chargers limp to Foxborough after Rivers, Tomlinson are ...

Back on Sept. 16, a Sunday night game in the second week of the season, the Patriots were just getting started on their 16-0 run and blowing away anyone in their path. Their margin of victory dropped markedly in the second half of the season, but New England will still be 17-0 when it plays host to the Chargers next Sunday.

"A lot's happened since then," Patriots coach Bill Belichick said after the Chargers beat the Colts to qualify for a trip to Foxborough and the AFC title game. "We'll definitely start all over on the preparations. It's like it's a new team."

Bonnie Donny, The Isle o' Lewis Is Pining for Ye

The New York real-estate mogul has been touting his Scottish ancestry in a bid to build a $2.5 billion luxury golf resort near Aberdeen, about 270 miles southeast of here. There, a local council committee and some residents have spurned his advances, unimpressed by his claim that he felt like "kissing the earth" in the land where his mother, Mary Macleod, was born.

But here, in Ms. Macleod's actual birthplace, locals say he'd be more than welcome. People "are always asking me when he's coming," says William Murray, whose mother was Mary's niece. "I say, 'I don't know. Your guess is as good as mine.'"

The Macleod family has deep roots in Lewis. Mary Macleod was born here in Tong, now a village of about 500, in 1912, one of six children of a fisherman and his wife. Macleod remains a common last name: 116 of the 1,800 residents who work for the Lewis town council are Macleods.

Kenya's feuding parties face parliamentary showdown

Western governments, including Britain and the United States, say the presidential vote was flawed. But election observers essentially gave the parliamentary ballot, held the same day, a clean bill of health.

Odinga's Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) won 99 seats in parliament to 43 for Kibaki's Party of National Unity (PNU), which means Kibaki will have to try to get bills approved by lawmakers who believe his administration is illegitimate.

"Some people say they don't recognise the government. Are they going to refuse to get sworn in and if so, what happens next?" said political analyst X.N. Iraki.

"It's going to be very acrimonious. We should definitely expect some drama."

Some opposition members have vowed to occupy seats on the government side of the house, by force if necessary, guaranteeing a stormy session.
