Guest post: Chris Matyszczyk follows on my review of Nick Carr's new book with the saga of his own trying exegesis of the text.

"You're obsessed with sex," said my ZDNet handler, looking angrier than a caucuser who had just switched his vote from Chris Dodd to Hillary.

"But sex gets page views. And you pay me for page views, right?" I replied, stroking my sex robot Larry's smooth, square metal head.

"Why can't you write something about, you know, tech?" growled my handler, his eyes welling with the frustration of a New Year's Resolution broken on January 1st.

Food Industry 1991-2000

In nearly ten years of its existence, the Russian food market has changed almost beyond recognition. The heroes of the first half of the 1990s gave place to new companies and people in the middle of the -90s. Surprisingly enough, this process has been peaceful. Unlike the oil and aluminum industries, shootings, bailiffs, and battles with labor collectives have been the exception rather than the rule.

1991
On the initiative of former KGB officer Boris Smirnov, the Center for Ecological Problems of the USSR Academy of Creative Endeavors registered a small state enterprise P.A. Smirnov and Descendants in Moscow (P.A. Smirnov i potomki v Moskve). The company was established to produce Smirnov vodka according to pre-Revolutionary recipes. Smirnov stated that his vodka would be produced parallel to the American brand Smirnoff and that P.A.

How to build a strong economy

Nicolas acquired his passion for cooking while working as a dishwasher at Le Saint-Amour, a highly regarded restaurant where he still works. He qualified for the World Skills Competition in 2006, when he won the Skills Canada competition for cooking. He then trained like an Olympic athlete to get ready for Japan, with intense coaching from his former teachers and his Saint-Amour colleagues.

The World Skills winners now have a credential that should lead to a good career. But, as I wrote in my last column on Dec. 31, the pathway from school to work in Canada is still a long and chaotic journey. Too many apprentices are dropping out. And the average age of a new apprentice is 28, when they could start 10 years earlier if more schools and employers offered that option.

Readers of that column argued passionately that Canadians devalue vocational trades.

Behind the Edwards Surge: Right Message at the Right Time

It wasn't a great rhetorical flourish. It wasn't even a new statement. Rather, it was a particularly pointed and effective restatement of the core anti-corporate message of his campaign.

But it came precisely when Iowa Democrats were getting serious about the caucuses. And it gave Edwards the boost he needed to get back in the competition — and, he is, very much in the competition now.

No serious observer of the December 13 debate in Des Moines doubted that the standout performance, and the standout message, was that of Edwards.

Indeed, undecided voters assembled in focus groups that watched the debate for the major television networks rated Edwards off the charts. That's going to help the 2004 Democratic nominee for vice president as the Iowa caucuses approach.
